Introduction

The cerebral cortex is the outermost layer of the human cerebrum. It controls important psychological functions such as awareness, consciousness, and attention. Different regions of the cortical surface correspond to various subsets of aforementioned functions, and it is useful to be able to accurately identify or label these regions given a raw set of MRI imaging data.

Currently, very powerful algorithms and pipelines exist for segmenting out the 71 regions of the cortex (see Appendix: External Software), but there are almost always varying degrees of error in the label topology, especially on the gyral boundaries (sulci). The purpose of this protocol is to provide a tool and method for manual correction of existing cortical surface gyral labels.

The bulk of this protocol will consist of identifying gyri and sulci and correcting them accordingly.
